What it's for
This test measures your typing speed in words per minute (WPM) and your accuracy (% of correct characters), based on an English sample text. The timer starts automatically on your first keystroke and stops when you finish typing the whole text.
How WPM is calculated
We use the standard typing-test industry convention, where 1 "word" = 5 typed characters (including spaces), rather than a literal count of space-separated words. This convention exists because real words vary a lot in length — counting characters gives a more consistent measure across typists. The formula is: WPM = (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes elapsed.
How accuracy is calculated
Accuracy compares, character by character, what you typed against the sample text at the same position. The result is the percentage of characters that are correct out of the total typed.
Tips to improve
Typing without looking at the keyboard (touch typing), keeping your fingers on the home row, and practicing regularly in short sessions tend to improve both speed and accuracy over time.
Frequently asked questions
Why does WPM use 5 characters per word instead of counting real words?
That's the standard typing-test industry convention, since real words vary a lot in length. Counting in blocks of 5 characters (including spaces) gives a fairer, more comparable measure across different texts and typists.
Does the test count mistakes I corrected with backspace?
Accuracy is calculated from the final text you typed when you finish, compared character by character with the sample — mistakes corrected before the end aren't penalized.
Can I retake the test with the same text?
Yes, use the "Restart test" button to reset the timer and try again with the same sample text.
Is my typed text sent to any server?
No — all timing and character comparison happens locally in your browser.
