How the calculation works
First, the dog's resting energy requirement (RER) is calculated: RER = 70 × weight(kg)^0.75, in kcal/day. Then it's multiplied by an activity factor (1.2 for low, 1.6 for moderate, 2.0 for high) to reach total daily calorie needs.
From kcal to grams
This calculator assumes a standard dry food with about 3.5 kcal per gram (typical for commercial kibble, though it varies). The gram result is a starting estimate.
Important
The specific product's packaging is always the final reference — premium/super-premium foods have different calorie density, and the manufacturer's feeding chart already accounts for that.
Frequently asked questions
Does this apply to any food brand?
Not exactly — calorie density varies by brand and line. Use the result as a starting point and adjust based on the product's own feeding chart.
What about puppies or pregnant dogs?
Puppies, pregnant and lactating dogs have quite different calorie needs than an adult — consult a vet for those specific cases.
My dog is overweight — should I use current or ideal weight?
For weight loss, vets usually calculate based on ideal weight, not current — consult a professional before reducing food amounts.
