Length units
Metric: kilometer, meter, centimeter, millimeter. Imperial (used in the US and UK): mile, yard, foot and inch. 1 mile = 1,609.344 meters; 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters.
Weight units
Metric: metric ton, kilogram, gram, milligram. Imperial: pound and ounce. 1 pound = 0.45359237 kg; 1 ounce = 28.349523125 grams.
Volume units
Metric: cubic meter, liter, milliliter. US customary: gallon and cup (common in American recipes). 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 liters; 1 US cup = 236.588 ml.
Frequently asked questions
Why isn't temperature conversion here?
Temperature has its own calculator (Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin), since the conversion isn't a simple multiplication by a factor — it involves adding or subtracting an offset.
Is the gallon used US or imperial?
It's the US gallon (3.785 liters), the most commonly used internationally in technical and commercial contexts. The British imperial gallon is about 20% larger.
