How to calculate the amount of paint
The basic formula is: Liters = (area × number of coats ÷ paint coverage) × loss margin. Coverage varies by paint type and surface — the values used here are typical market averages.
Average coverage by paint type
| Type | Average coverage |
|---|---|
| Latex/emulsion | ~6 m²/liter per coat |
| Acrylic | ~5 m²/liter per coat |
| Enamel | ~8 m²/liter per coat |
Why 2 coats?
Most manufacturers recommend at least two coats for uniform coverage, especially when painting over a different color or an unpainted wall.
Tip
Real coverage can vary depending on wall texture, color (dark/vivid colors sometimes need extra coats) and application method (roller vs. brush vs. sprayer).
Frequently asked questions
Are these coverage figures exact?
They're market averages — actual coverage varies by brand, surface texture and application method; always check the paint can label.
Why does the calculator already add a margin?
To cover small losses during application and touch-ups, so you don't run out of paint mid-job.
Do I need extra coats when changing to a very different color?
Usually yes — going from a dark color to a light one (or vice versa) may require an extra coat.
Does this work for ceiling paint too?
Yes, just enter the ceiling area in the area field.
